Eggs In The Easy Letter

Ms. Jingle,

A year ago, you published a letter that I sent about the work Georgia Tech students were doing to help the Maasai tribe in Kenya and Tanzania. Since raising over $25,000 for the Maasai, these students have not abandoned their love for their fellow man.

Since Hurricane Katrina ravaged the gulf coast, the students at Georgia Tech have continued to donate their time and energy to rebuild the lives of the victims of that terrible storm. A campus ministry at Georgia Tech, Christian Campus Fellowship, began sending van loads of workers as soon as a week after the storm hit. Soon there was an organized initiative dubbed "Geaux to the Gulf" in which over 250 students volunteered their fall break in order to gut homes and clean up streets. A year later, while the media coverage and national attention was dwindling, another 250 students gave up another fall break to continue in the ever present relief efforts.

A few months ago, a church in the Denver area that was familiar with our efforts gave us a call. They offered us $20,000 to go and continue our work on the city of New Orleans. We were more than happy to take their offer. Soon, students were taking a break from studying in order to dream of what we could do next to help the friends we had made in Louisiana.

Before long, we had an idea called "Eggs in the Easy". It is a student led initiative over Easter weekend that will seek to accomplish two goals. One is to build a quality playground for children living in the hurricane devastated community of Chalmette, Louisiana. The second goal is to spend Easter Sunday hosting a massive Easter egg hunt for all the kids that live in the area. Activities will include a free picnic and lots of Easter eggs. Just last week, someone donated over 20,000 plastic Easter eggs! There are already over 300 students signed up to volunteer for the weekend and we are forming partnerships with student groups from UGA, Georgia Southern, Auburn and Kennesaw State.

While this is going to be a weekend that none of us will soon forget, we still have needs to meet. There are hundreds of students that are excited to donate their sweat and energy, but what they do not have is a lot of money. Unfortunately, to build a decent playground and to make this trip free to all volunteers, we still need over $20,000 more to make this trip a success.

Would you partner with the students around this state by publishing this letter in the Atlanta-Journal?
