the next 3 years!
_____
Okay. Here is the deal. I realize that I normally go on and on about
the silly little things that happen in my life. From time to time I
make mention of fundraising, or of England, or of a student that is
over there. A few weeks ago, I asked my friend Pete, who was baptized
at Canvas in March, to share a few words about the ministry. This is
what he said:
"Hello my name is Pete and I am a student at the England Globalscope
Canvas.
Tatum has asked me to write a short summary about Canvas for one of
his daily updates so here it is.
Canvas has quite simply changed my life. I honestly don't know where I
would be without them. They have shown me a love and community that I
didn't think existed anymore. The friends I have made through Canvas
are like no friends I have ever had before. They know me better than I
know myself and everyone looks out for one another like we were
family. Canvas is the reason that I am a Christian now because they
showed me the truth and they did it with out being patronising or
condescending or by being judgmental which is how I have seen a lot of
Christians behave in the past. Because of this I listened to them and
I began to see the world in a completely different way.
This is what Canvas is to me and I urge those reading this to get
involved with Globalscope and come and experience the love and
community for yourselves.
Oh and they give out loads of free food which is nice!"
So that is what Pete says. But let me paint you a picture of where I
am.
I'm raising the money to go over there so I can be a part of more
people like Pete experiencing this incredible gift of love and
community.
Here is what we've accomplished so far: I have a budget of about
$5,000 a month. I've raised, a little over half, pulling me to 55% to
be exact.
There are 209 people that are on this list.
I have a total of 51 supporters that make up 55% of my budget.
What if you guys, this community, put me at the finish line?
If only 100 of you decided to give just $15 a month, that would put me
at about 90%. I'd be almost finished.
Think about that. Just like that. In the middle of an awful economy,
you can do something that is completely uncommon- being a small part
of a big group that causes the incredible to happen.
And it is only the difference of a trip to dinner once a month.
One politician said, quite famously, "That it takes a village to raise
a child." Well it's the same with this. To do anything that is great
and beautiful, it takes community. It takes you, the college student,
the missionary on the field, the unemployed, the grad student, and
saying, "Yeah. I can give 15 bucks a month."
Just imagine what you have been a part of so far. Here is this guy
who has struggled with something his entire life. For what has
happened, here is how the credit is distributed- First, God. He has
made this whole thing happen. Second- you. You being in this is the
reason that I tell everyone in the world how this has worked. If it
were not for you, I would not have lost all of this weight. No way.
Thank you.
So you have brought me this far. You, as a community, have carried
me. Now, I'm asking that you finish it. Your 15 a month plays a very
real and tangible hand in the ministry of England- in Pete and others
experiencing what they have. You are not throwing money down a hole,
you are investing in the Kingdom of God on Earth as it is in Heaven.
All you need to do is reply, and say "Yes."
If you're completely unemployed, then you can wait to begin when you
get a job. That's fine. Just reply "Yes."
If the idea of a 100 people giving 15/month sounds too easy- well- it
almost is. We could wrap up fundraising and then it is just a matter
of losing some more weight and getting a visa (and a few other things
that CMF requires like books and such).
That's it.
Myself and some close friends have been praying hard about this for a
couple of days. I really see this as a beautiful chance to make an
amazing story complete. It just takes a 100 of you to reply and say
"yes". Imagine what a story we would have.
